APRIL 10 SOLAR HOUSE TOUR IN NEW HARTFORD

Sponsored by PACE and the Connecticut Clean Energy Fund

A low-budget solar house in New Hartford, built with cost-efficient financing, will be open for viewing by the public on April 10 from 12 noon to 4:00 p.m. Sponsored by People's Action for Clean Energy (PACE) and the Connecticut Clean Energy Fund (CCEF), the house tour will be held rain or shine. Vendors and homeowners will be present to answer questions about clean energy, affordable green lifestyles and CCEF programs.

This zero energy challenge (www.ctzeroenergychallenge.com) home has a 7.6 kilowatt grid-tied, roof-mounted photovoltaic system leased through the Connecticut Clean Energy Fund Leasing Program. Among the unique energy conservation systems are the home's box design with open floor plan, a cupola to release summer heat, a three-foot thick sand earth-box heat sink, radiant floor heating and a waterless urinal.

Solar hot water is supplemented with back-up water heating using a small propane on-demand Takagi. Ecological building products on display include structural insulated panels, bamboo floors and salvaged wood, doors and cabinetry.

Low-e windows, Hardie Panel vertical cement siding, motion sensor lights, Energy Star appliances, interior no-VOC paint and energy-efficient lighting also attest to the homeowners' commitment to energy conservation and a healthy environment.

Non-refundable tickets for the April 10 tour may be ordered by sending $15 per person to PACE c/o Donna Grant, 128 Melrose Road, Broadbrook, CT 06016.

Tickets may also be ordered online at www.pace-cleanenergy.org by clicking on Events. Tickets, including a map, will be sent to ticket holders. For ticket information, call 860.623.5487. For tour information, call 860.693.4813 or go to www.pace-cleanenergy.org.
