Town Schools Saved $19K in Less Than 3 Weeks- How’d We Do It?

With budget deficits and unpleasant economic forecasts dominating the news, here’s a bright spot.

Throughout November, all West Hartford Public Schools are competing in an effort to conserve electricity, with a goal of reducing electrical consumption by ten percent. It’s good for the planet and good for the budget.

As of November 18, all West Hartford schools combined saved almost 115,000 kilowatt hours on their electric bills.  That translates to a savings of $19,000 – and that’s with 12 days left to save even more.  If we kept up even this modest effort, we’d be on track to save $385,000 over the year.

The chart below shows each school’s progress toward its goal.  Bristow is almost there, while seven other schools have already well surpassed their goals.

All month long, you can track each school’s daily progress toward the goal at the WHPS Conservation Challenge website, where you can also find information for kids, teachers, parents and homeowners.
