Make It Green!/Blue Back Park
Update
March 29, 2008
Dear Make It Green Supporters and Inquirers:
Below you will find a summary of information I have gathered regarding the planning process
for a public park in the Blue Back Square District of West Hartford, as well as an elaboration on
the basic principles I am proposing for adoption by Make It Green. These principles are inspired
by discussions with and messages from all of you. I hope that each one of you will see
yourself—your vision and wisdom—reflected in these principles.
I would also like to propose two next steps: (1) inviting the broad spectrum of people in West
Hartford to consider supporting/joining Make It Green (i.e., spreading the word); and (2) setting
a date for a meeting for a discussion of the general vision, basic design principles, and guiding
practice principles of Make It Green. I do not want things to get too complex, but I think it would
be a good idea to start by deciding what we stand for as a group, and perhaps setting up a slightly
more formal organizational structure. People will want to be involved to various degrees and on
various aspects of the project, so it would be a good idea to set up some kind of procedure for
channeling our talents.
I am also including a copy of a simple flyer which you may distribute to people in the
community as an introduction to the ideas of the group. Feel free to distribute the detailed
“update” document if you wish where you think appropriate to do so. Please let me know which
organizations, if any, that you contact, so that I will not reproduce your efforts. Please also be
aware that any public (or private) space, including the library, requires that you obtain
permission before distributing or posting flyers.
I am so grateful to all of you for your responses to my requests for support. In my preliminary
Internet searches I have yet to find any other park like the park vision of Make It Green. Beyond
being an amazing gateway for community building, education, and sustainability in West
Hartford, Make It Green presents us with the opportunity to inspire individuals, institutions, and
municipalities to address, with hopefulness and creativity, the environmental challenges that we
face.
I welcome your responses and suggestions. Thank you for your time.
Sincerely,
Linda Astur
